Bailey’s opens.

1876

An outgrowth of a candy store founded by John Bailey and D.H. Page in 1873, the restaurant opens at 43 – 45 West Street. It becomes known for its chopped ham-and-pickled sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, and marble-topped tables. The company is purchased by Franklin Wyman Jr. in 1960 and expands to nearly a dozen other restaurants in and around Boston. The company is purchased by Frank Benson, the former president of Fanny Farmer Candies, in 1983, then by Joey Crugnale, who closes the shops in 1989.
